Mission Techies Spring 2016 Class

Mission Techies Spring 2016 Class
Spring 2016 @ Doubledutch

Thursday, August 13, 2015

My time as a Mission Techie Intern has sadly come to an end. I am a returning Techie, who decided to take the class once I reviewed the curriculum. I joined this program in hopes for an increase of knowledge in the Tech field. I was surprised to find out, that the new curriculum does not only teach you the Tech skills, but the soft skills to land a tech job as well. I had a great time working with people like Olivia, Karen, Mark, and Cesia. They provided a great vibe that promoted the development of learning. These were only some of the instructors that added depth into the program. There were also other like Matias and the head instructor Leo, did an excellent job on inspiring individuals to learn and pursue their goals.
Let me start of by breaking down the Job-Readiness portion with Olivia was excellent in providing me with the adequate skills to prepare and handle a job interview. I never knew there can be so many things that can be done in preparation to an interview. Some examples I will always carry away from this class, is the Thank you letters and the follow up. Olivia also helped me think like an interviewer and brainstorm some questions that are frequently ask during one. It was great to learn some trick questions some employers might ask, in order to read the type of person you might be.
Another course we took was the Business Communication class which piggy-backed into the Job-Readiness portion. This class showed us how to behave in a work environment at the same time ways how to sharpen our communication skills. We practiced how to effectively communicate, and did a presentation that allowed me to gain some confidence. Even though I did not finish my power point I was pretty proud of myself. I was able to go up in front of my peers and present my work in front of them. It was nerve wrecking. The feeling that came after was way more rewarding.
On some days, we would learn a little about tech support. This portion was important because of the skill it requires. It may sound simple, but being able to communicate the hardships of troubleshooting a computer and fixing in a manner to someone who may not understand the tech lingo could be difficult. Being able to ask the right questions to map out the problem is easier said than done. This class was a little harder to deal with and it could have been better than originally presented.
Throughout our intense tech training we had some guest speakers who came in to talk about what they do in the tech industry. We had speaker from Google, Jones IT, Tech SF, and many more. I am bummed to say, I missed two of them because of my absences. No excuse can replace the knowledge these guys and gals shared with my peers. I really did enjoy some presentations like Mission Bytes coming in, because of the material. I think these presentations are useful because it opens up options on what to do after the Mission Techies Internship.
Four days out of the week, we would end the last hour with a coding portion. We learned some basic Java code that was tested in an App called Dr.Java. This class was fun, because you can visualize your code come to life. Although it was difficult to understand the code, once you caught on to the layout it became a little bit easier. Sadly our instructor Mark left before we could finish the program, so we didn’t get the chance to create our final project.
My Overall view of the program is a positive one for the implementation of these other courses into the curriculum. I felt like I was in a mini-University for tech. Reviewing all the hardware stuff and software was incredible and hopefully it soaks in this time. We also did try something new; Cable-Crimpling. This activity was very fun, but required a load of patients. Treading the cable into the RJ-45 cap was not the easiest of task because of the wrinkled wires.
My experience here was even better the second time. I loved the vibe this place provided and the people I met here were all very talented in their own ways. The staff and people we met through the programs networking was phenomenal and will not change it for the world. I had a blasts getting to see old staff friends and meeting new ones. I hope this program continues to grow and the curriculum continues to improve. I love this place’s goal and wish to see more people of color occupying those tech jobs, not just people of color, but low-income folks who are natives to put an end to gentrification here in the city.

The Last Week - Encryptian

We have been practicing and going over our interviews to prepare for an upcoming one. I have to go to another interview again to Year Up and thought this interview was cool to practice. I just hope to be able to be accepted. Also visited an app company and was visited by Steven Cook the CEO to Mission Bit. That was pretty cool, getting to know another organization with similar goals. The Double Dutch tour was also interesting to know how it came along. Starting with one office room and grew to four whole floors of the same building in the time span they had is incredible to hear. Also have been preparing to open the upcoming program graduation. Taking apart laptops and desktops was a fun experience as well as a challenge to match all the screws in the right order.
The financial capability class was refreshing to understand how I spend my money as well as finding ways to enhance how I express my own skills to job employers. I have enjoyed my time working with MEDA on my soft skills and honing my technical skills.

week six blog

This summer I was an intern for the mission techies program at MEDA SF, it was a great experience that I would recommend to all my friends and family. As a biology major I came to learn about programing more than anything else, I felt as if it was an important part of information technology that anyone who is trying to be competitive in today’s job market should learn. When I came on the day of orientation I learned that while programing was included in the program there was a lot more that went into it, everything from job training, to wireless networking and even financial capability it was pretty overwhelming at first.
Coming in on the first day I was amazed to see so little people, I expected there to be at least 20 young people trying to take advantage of such an amazing free program that is offered right in their back yard. I found that the people here where almost exactly like me, trying to take advantage of the opportunities around them to learn about technology and earn a 500 dollar stipend. These are my new friends; I really looked forward to coming to the program every day just to see them.
The environment was very unique, I felt as if I was in a business setting where we worked hard to reach our goals for the day weather it was getting a lecture from one of the many guest speakers or listening to Leo talk lecture about hardware. But at the same time I felt as if I was free to be myself and express my personal opinions not only to my peers but to the staff around me as well whether it was Leo, Olivia or Mark.
My favorite part of the program was definitely working hands on with the computers. Whether it was in the hardware demonstrations or when we were doing technical support for low income families. It felt as if we were making a real difference that we could see, I found myself very motivated to fix any problems I could find to the best of my ability and when I couldn’t I knew I could ask someone around me for help. Taking apart the computers and putting them back together helped me conceptualize how they worked and made me much more interested in the information technology field.
Before coming to the program I felt as if I wanted to go into the medical field, specifically working for the public health sector with people around the world to fight the unhealthiness of America. But after learning so much about technology I found that my real passion lies in the biotechnology field integrating two things I know most about biology and technology. Throughout this program I learned a lot about myself I found myself thinking differently because of programing and looking at the technology in everyday life and not taking it for granted because someone somewhere worked hard to put it together and make it work.

week 6

My Mission Techies experience

Well my overall summer was fantastic! Went from Costa Rica to an amazing experience at the Mission Techies program! Got to say the summer 2015 was unforgettable. I’m super glad for these 6 weeks. Yes we all know I sacrificed a whole of time I could be doing absolutely nothing; but I’m glad I did this because I learned a whole lot that helped me/ guide me to the path I would like to pursue. All the time put into this was worth it because I feel like I grew as a person and well learned a whole lot of factors I can take with me to the big world. As I’m going into my senior year I feel that I’m taking a whole lot with me, such as coding, hardware and software knowledge. The most exciting experience for me was being to put together and take apart a computer! That’s where I realized that I would like to do something with computers especially in the hardware department. As we all know the coding part was not one of my strength and it was pretty obvious, I did learn a couple things I can take with myself.
Learning from software, hardware, coding to learning business communication as well as financial capability was great because -yes, I did know a little about each area but- now I have a complete understanding on what I need to keep doing to succeed. Honestly, I will never forget this program! It honestly has impacted my life not only for me but my colleagues and family. Where it has helped me realize what I need to keep doing to be one of the few women in the tech field especially coming from sf to be in the tech world.
Spending over 100 hours coming Monday thru Friday I have developed not only great friends but family! Being able to have the opportunity to visit companies such as Double Dutch, and Year up gave me the opportunity to develop a sense on how I would like to see myself in the future.
As this program is coming to an end I would like to thank Leo for being there for everyone especially myself.

Week 6

Over that past 6 weeks at the Summer 2015 Mission Techies Program at MEDA, Mission Economic Development Agency, I was able to gain a greater understanding of technology. Before the Mission Techies Program, I didn’t have that much experience in technology. I became interested in becoming a Mission Techie Intern because I wanted to improve my skills and strengthen my knowledge. I was introduced to different variety of technical fields, such as hardware, software, networking, coding, and tech support. In hardware, I learned how to take Macs, PCs, and Towers apart from the surface to the motherboard while identifying the components and then putting it all back together. In Coding, I learned something new every day. Sometimes its challenging, but I eventually begin to understand how to write the code. Tech support was the area of interest I wanted to continue my career on because I enjoyed providing assistance and helping clients by fixing their technical devices. Aside from technology, Mission Techies Program prepared and helped me with my resume, cover letter, and references in Job Readiness Training class. Also, this class helped me to create a LinkedIn, which allowed me to connect with my peers and expand my network.
During the Mission Techies Program, I went on two field trips. The first was the Year-Up program, which is a one-year, intensive training program that provides low-income young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships. The second was DoubleDutch, which is a tech company that builds mobile apps to produce high quality events. I enjoyed getting a tour from both places and learning about the importance of the program and company. For instance, in Year-Up the Outreach Coordinator, Sotheara Yem, presented and showed videos about Year-Up alumni and alumnae telling their experience in the program. At the same time, there were a few videos that I was able to relate.

Overall, I am proud to say that the Mission Techies Program is supportive towards those who have interests and passion in technology, which they will guide you to achieving your career goals. Thank you Mission Techies for helping me become a better and well-prepared person. The skills I’ve learned will remain with me as I will continue to pursue in the tech support.

week 6 as an mission techies

Mission Techies

when I joined mission techies I had a goal to complete the program with more knowledge and skills to be successful in the tech world we live in today. For six weeks every day Monday through Friday from 1pm to 5pm we dedicated our time to learn useful tools to advance are hard skills. The first day was the introduction day the ice breaker to know who everybody is and why they came to the program. Mission techies provides so many tools that you can take from and use it in the future for a tech job. They offer classes such as business communication, coding with Dr java, networking, product management, tech support, hardware, and etc. Working in a team environment where your going to need help from something build communication skills and social skills that would be useful in a company setting . Learning computer programming was a fun experiences because coding is the prime tool lots of people want to learn these days to find that one job that would set you up for life. Doing mock interviews really give you an understanding on what big companies will ask you when interview. Many visitors from top rated companies such as CEO's and employees came down to talk to us about what they do and how they got there, their stories helps me get an understanding on where to start my journey. We visited many companies such as Year-up, Double Dutch, and Facebook, going to this places lights my inner fire which is ambition to hopefully get where I want to be in life while staying humble. Living in Silicon valley is the mecca for tech related jobs. My dream job is to someday work for Google in the product management or marketing department. Taking these path earlier in my life is going to make my future so much brighter and successful. Thanks to MEDA for providing mission techies for the great opportunity to advance my skills and knowledge to make it in the tech world.

Week 6

Spending my summer as a Mission Techie was a really good experience. I came into the program having minimal knowledge about hardware, software, and coding. All I knew was that I was interested in computers and technology and I wanted to learn more about them. In hardware, we started off learning a little about each component. Leo gave us a PowerPoint presentation on the parts of a computer, like the hard drive, motherboard, CMOS battery, RAM, etc. The presentation got me really excited to start taking apart PCs because I was really curious about how everything fit together in an actual computer. One thing that I wish was done differently was to have each individual part shown in front of us while they were being introduced during the PowerPoint presentation. That way, things become more tangible and therefore more applicable when we finally start taking apart the PCs on our own. Other than that, I liked how the hands-on projects were very flexible and Leo let us explore and experiment with the parts by ourselves.

One of the guest speakers that stood out to me was Luis, the engineer from Google/Youtube. He knew he loved math and was good at it so all throughout college, that’s the only thing he focused on. Even though he was scared to get a job, he still found one because he was so passionate about it. I can really relate to that because I love math too, and hopefully my passions and abilities will help me find a good job in the future.

One of my highlights from tech support was fixing a Dell PC that wasn’t turning on. We diagnosed the problem and figured out that the computer needed a new RAM. After replacing the RAM, it turned on. Fixing a computer for the first time made me feel very accomplished. In the beginning, it can be really confusing and make you doubt yourself. However, after discovering what the problem is, you realize that the solution is not as complicated as you think it is.

I really liked the Doubledutch site visit. It was very interesting to visit a successful mid-size company that is expanding. Even though the workspace was very cramped because of limited space, it seemed like everyone was still working efficiently. There was a balcony that was designed so that people had an option to either work indoors or outdoors. It seemed like even with limited amount of space and funding, the workers were still being taken care of. When I come out of college, I would want to work in an environment like Doubledutch’s. During the panel, I was very fascinated to learn that the people that work there did not start off with a background in technology or engineering. It made me realize how flexible you have to be when you’re looking for a career in technology which opens up a lot of opportunities.

Overall, my experience as a Mission Techie made me more confident about entering into the technology industry. I learned a lot about the technical aspects of technology which made me more knowledgeable about computers. On the other hand, I also learned a lot about technology as an industry and career path, and the Mission Techies program really enforced my passion for computers and technology.

Week 6

Final Reflection

I am really proud to have been part of the Mission Techies summer program of 2015. This experience was incredible in many ways. I learned a great deal that has prepared me for the tech industry. Being part of the mission techies I experienced a lot firsts.
This was the first time that I ever opened a computer or laptop and put it back together. If a year ago someone asked me to open and identify components from their computer, I would have been too scared to even consider it. But today, I can. I can identify the CPU (computer processing unit), the RAM (random access memory), the motherboard and I can put it all back perfectly. I can do this because I was a Mission Techie.
This was also this first time I wrote lines of code, “Hello World”. I remember the feeling of running that first code and seeing the words appear in green letter. It felt fantastic. Before the techies program I saw coding as a skill that only super smart math geniuses could compute. But I was able to do it because I was a Mission Techie.
We didn’t just learn about the technicalities/smarts of being a techie, we also explored what the tech industry was like. Our career development classes with Olivia prepared us to enter the tech industry. Everything from writing our elevator pitches to making our LinkedIn profiles.
One of the most important thing that I gained this summer from being a Mission Techie was confidence. Confidence in myself for pursuing a degree in the tech industry. Confidence in being a women in the tech industry. Confidence in being a person of color in tech. The environment of the mission techies program was open and diverse. We had the privilege of having so many incredible speakers of all backgrounds come and share their stories and experiences with us. We also were lucky to have the CEO of Jones IT teach us about networking.

We also did a lot of fun site visits. My favorite one was going to the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park. They set up a panel where some of the Facebook employees shared their experiences on how they became a part of the Facebook team. We also did a site visit to Year Up. That was really inspiring to see all the stories of the past Year Up graduates.
I am so grateful that I got to be a part of the MEDA Mission Techies. Not only did I gain so much knowledge about the tech industry, I also gained confidence that I want a career in the tech industry and that I am capable of that. Plus these past six weeks as a mission techie have been so much fun getting to hang out with the other techies and learning from one another. So thank you for everything.

6th Week!!!!!!

My summer at the Mission Techies program has been great. Coming into the program I didn't know what to expect. I had no technology experience and had no idea  what I wanted to do with my life. This program showed me so much. I learned computer hardware which made me really nervous because i was so afraid to break the computer.  Thankfully i had Elias to help me. Breaking down a computer was a bit difficult for me but breaking down a mac was fun and interesting. I also learned computer software which i really didn't fully learn but just knew what to do if u have a troubleshoot problem with a laptop. The coding was hard to keep up with. I like coding but the class was a bit too accelerated for me. This program also offers business communication, financial capability, and tech support. Those courses were sorta common sense but a good reminder. I liked the company i had throughout the 6 weeks, i had so much fun with them and wish them the best. We also went on cool field trips like Facebook and Double Dutch. That was really amazing to see companies like that and see how they work. What really caught my eye was how the tech industry treats their employees with care and the tech world is somewhere  see myself in 5 years. Overall I loved this program. I tell all my friends about it. Thanks to this program i know what i wanna do and for the first time in a long time i'm not scared of growing up. I think people see the world as a scary place because you’re scared of something you're not familiarized with but once you figure out your path it's like finding the flashlight to guide you in the dark . After the mission techies program i'm going to finish high school and then join  Year Up to increase my knowledge in technology and hopefully work at a tech company at the age of twenty. I really loved his program and would recommend it to anyone even if they don't have tech experience because i didn't and if I can do it then so can anyone else. Now i know what i wanna do and how i'm going to do it and that's all thanks to leo and the great staff that has motivated me and helped me through these 6 weeks

Week 5 Mission Techies

I can't believe that it has already been 5 weeks... I have had so much fun learning about the various parts of technology from coding to tech support, but my favorite part of this weeks activities was the presentations. It was amazing to hear about the interest the other mission techies and hear them talk about it.
The one that stuck out the most in my mind was the one by Gorge on the drug cartels and drug trafficking around us. He shed light on the atrocities happening all around us from the decapitations to the tortures and how the DEA and the war on drugs are making a minimal impact.

Week 5

Today we had presentations for business communication class. It was really interesting because I learned a lot about drug cartels, solar power, energy, pit bulls, and more. I learned that granny smith apples can only be grown on a specific tree in Sydney, Australia and I didn't know that before. I also didn't know that granny smith apples have a lot of antioxidants, are low in calories, and can help weight loss because they increase satiety. I also liked the presentations about self-driven cars and cars. I learned that Google has already successfully created a self-driven car that works. It blows my mind to think that in five years cars will be driving themselves and people won't have to steer or pay attention to the road. On Tuesday, we worked on crimping cables and creating a crossover cable. It was really cool to take apart wires and order them so that each end of the cable has a corresponding cable and when we plug it into the tester all 8 lights lit up. It was really annoying at first because we had to make sure each of the 8 individual wires were cut in line and we also had to remove the plastic covering carefully. We had to restart a lot of times because we kept accidentally cutting off the whole wire. In tech support, Martin, Esmeralda, and I had a Dell PC that wasn't turning on so we replaced the power source and RAM from an identical PC we had in the lab, and it actually worked! It felt really nice to fix the computer. I'm really sad that we only have a week left. I feel like there is so much more to learn and I will make the most out of next week!

Week 5 of Being A Techie

Hello, I had an exciting 5th week as a techie. We had a presentation today about our topic of our choosing. My topic was the history of gaming. I chose this topic because I wanted to learn the history of something that is so widely accepted. Once I began to do my research, it was more complicated than I thought it would be. I felt I did not do so well on my presentation, because I did not finish all my slides. I had a difficult time picking and choosing what will go on my slides and trying to understand the terminology of old school computers. I really did enjoy my research because it was definitely in connection to the development of computers. Other than the presentation, I also did have fun working on tech support. I almost forgot to mention our visit to Year Up this week. They have a nice facility and I wish to become a part of them for the March term. I am looking forward to my final week as a techie.

Peace and Love,
CaliGB

The 5th week

The weeks was as interesting as ever. Going to Year Up twice and having to crimp cables was fun. It took a while for me to get used to the idea of how to crimp the ethernet chord. But, thankfully I got to at the least understand the concept of how it works and the method to do it.
Tech support this week was a bit frustrating; the first problem being that the computers my and my partner were working on was password locked... Or at the least the passwords that was previously established wouldn't work at all. After switching the position of the network to try to get an image from the server to try to work it, we were trapped with another obstacle of the network not responding to the server. In fact none of the computers in the lab were really responding to the server output. Something to continue working on hopefully.  Overall I've had fun with my time at MEDA and will sorta miss the community after next week.

Week 5

This week has been super chill. We have done tech support, worked on our cover letters and resumes (in preparations for mock interviews next week) and today we presented our business communication presentations.

The presentations today were awesome. The topics ranged from micro bugs, drug cartels and apples. (Yes apples.) In my opinion I think that we did well on our presentation. The presentation were interesting and not too long individually. But after going though 10, I will admit we all got a little fidgety.

Next week is our final week as mission techies. We have A LOT to get done with mock interviews, site visits, and of course the closing ceremony. I am going to Denver tonight and won't be back until Tuesday. I am missing two days of mission techies, hopefully I can keep up.

week 5

Week 5 as a mission techie was one of the best week so far yet. On monday we went to visit the year-up facility to learn about what they offer and what can happen if you apply to it. Then after we went to go get some pizza at blondies which made it such a successful day. On tue we did networking crimping with Alex which was really fun leaning how cable networking works. Then for the first of the day we worked on are business communication class. On wed we did job readiness training by working on are cover letters, reference, and resumes. On thur we worked on are final draft for business communication presentation. Then tech support for the rest of the day. On Friday we presented are final business communication presentation then after we did are blog for week 5. Only one more week left as a mission techie so much learned but i stay humble through the process of only one week left.

Chivano-kris

Week 5

On week 5 at Summer 2015 Mission Techies, we were able to have a tour at YearUp. YearUp is a one-year, intensive training program that provides low-income young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships. Also, this week I learned about crimping cables. my team was struggling with crimping cables because we kept messing up or the cables would loosen and rip off, which we had to start all over. Eventually, we were able to have a success. I  presented my project for Business Communication and I felt like I was prepared, but nervous at the same time. Next week, we are going to have mock interviews, which I am looking forward to doing, so it can prepare me for future.

week 5 - Esmeralda

Now that week 5 is coming to an end I have to say that it has been getting better and better ! Although this week went by super fast it has been great! As my group got its 2 task on tech support i was super proud because the issue that was wrong was something i detected ! Which is the power supply !!!! The way we started our week was amazing as well ! Going into year up was great and supper inspiring because it made me realize that i am doing the right thing going into the tech field ! Im thankful as well for the pizza ! Feel like that made us all get together and be a whole !

Going to our last week it is exciting yet a little depressing because this was a great program that i enjoyed very much !

4TH AND 5TH WEEK

I WAS GONE LAST WEEK SO YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T SEE MY POST. ACTUALLY, I WAS IN BERKELEY TO PARTICIPATE IN A APP-BUILDING PROGRAM HELD BY SAMSUNG.

IT WAS ENLIGHTENING! I GOT TO KNOW HOW TO PLAN AND BUILD AN APP, AND I USED MIT APP INVENTOR 2 TO BUILD IT. IT'S REALLY SIMPLE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT SINCE I DIDN'T KNOW MUCH JAVA, I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO IT. HOWEVER, THE THE UI WAS EASY AND ASSIGNING FUNCTIONS WAS A PIECE OF CAKE. I HAD TO PRESENT TO MY TEACHERS BOSSES AND IT WAS HILARIOUS BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T EVEN INTERESTED IN MY APP IT WAS SO THEY CAN KNOW HOW MUCH THE INSTRUCTORS TAUGHT AND IF THEY DID IT WELL. FRICKIN SAMSUNG HAHA

ANYWAY THIS WEEK I'M GLAD THAT I'M BACK BUT ALSO THE REST OF THE MISSION TECHIES DITCHED ME ON MONDAY. BECAUSE I COULDN'T GO TO THE YEAR UP VISIT, I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD MEET THE TECHIES BACK AT MEDA. BUT NOOOOOOOOOO NOOOO I WAS WRONG THEY DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP. I TEXTED JANET AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW THEY WERE EATING PIZZA. GREAT.

SO REALLY MY WEEK STARTED ON TUESDAY. I FOUND OUT MARK (UNSURPRISINGLY) LEFT. MARCELO AND JENNIFER TOO. OH WELL. I'M STILL HERE.

TODAY ON FRIDAY WE DID PRESENTATIONS. HONESTLY I THOUGHT THESE PRESENTATIONS WERE SUPPOSED BE MORE SERIOUS BUT I GUESS CESIA DIDN'T GIVE US ENOUGH SPECIFICATIONS ON WHAT TO DO IT ON. SO TODAY I LEARNED ABOUT GREEN APPLES AND HOW THEY MAKE YOU SAFER. MITCH AND ELIAS ARE DOG ENTHUSIASTS, JANET IS A NOTORIOUS HACKER, AND JORGE IS A REPUBLICAN. I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH THIS WEEK. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, IT'S ALMOST OVER I MAY EVEN CRY BUT I WON'T NOT BECAUSE I AM MANLY BUT BECAUSE WE ARE IN A DROUGHT AND I DON'T WANT TO WASTE WATER.

5th week

This week has been really relaxing and fun. Today we presented!!!! why was i more nervous preparing the presentation then i was doing it????? I did my presentation on pit bulls with Elias and i felt that went pretty well since i didn't feel that  bad about it. I learned a lot from the presentations ! like that green apples are the best kind of apples and that 3D car engine music YouTube videos have the best kind of music. Also i learned about darkode which was really fascinating considering i never even knew the website existed! This week has been the best week yet and i'm sad its about to be over. I have grown a great friendship with the mission techies.
